These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained active.
